Woodo
Philippe Woodtli aka DJ WOODO is a B-Boy Breaks DJ. He started B-Boying in the early nineties after watching Beat Street on TV. He has danced with several crews and has also battled in various competitions such as BOTY Switzerland. In 1997 he took up DJing so he could be part of the culture in case, for some reason, he could no longer dance.
WOODO originally spun rap tracks, but due to his dance background, began to edit practice tapes for himself and other B-Boys. At first, these tapes were full of the then popular big beats, but due to inspiration and support from Switzerland’s heavy funk diggers DJ Ilarius and DJ Pesa and also his idol and good friend Break DJ Leacy (RIP) WOODO got into original breaks.
In 2002, WOODO had an accident and had to stop breaking. That same year, he got the chance to DJ at the International Battle of the Year in Germany and that jumpstarted his career. At every event he plays, WOODO introduces new breaks to the B-Boys. His own B-Boying background is a big advantage in understanding what B-Boys need.
His third official tape “Enter the B-Boy breaks” introduced him to the worldwide dance scene and since its release WOODO’s been delivering the sound score for some of the largest and most established B-Boy events in the world such as the Battle of the Year and Mighty 4. His next effort, “B-Boy Breaks of Death” with its more obscure and rare breaks from the world of funk, rock, and other musical genres delivered in his very unique B-Boy style, got him even more recognition. With “Battle Tactics,” his first release on CD, DJ WOODO came up with a new concept, a mixture of heavy breaks and the voices of some of his favorite B-Boys and B-Girls from all over the world including Monty, Storm, Karim, Poe One, Stuntman, AB Girl, and Crazy, explaining their own personal battle tactics.
On his latest project, DJ WOODO takes it back to the essence of B-Boy music, the pure rhythm of raw drums. In cooperation with Switzerland’s top funk drummer JJ Flueck aka J:Loop he recorded a full length album entitled “Together Forever We’re #1.” The CD includes many unheard B-Boy breaks from various genres sounding even heavier through the addition of funky kicks, snares and hi-hats by J:Loop. It’s destined to become a future B-Boy classic!
DJing is WOODO’s passion but he doesn’t depend on it to make a living. He’s happy about that because he doesn’t have to take every gig and can DJ for the pure love of it and not just for the money. That gives him the creative freedom he wants. Apart from DJing, Philippe has many other interests. At the moment he is into card manipulation/magic tricks and kite surfing.
