Profile
Nineteen year old David Shreibman aka KID DAVID of the well-known San Francisco based B-Boy crew, Renegades, is a dancer to look out for. He is known for his intricate and explosive style based on glides, freezes, musicality and finesse. His focus is on the music—original moves on beat are what he aims for. He also is a great freestyler, not locked into prepared sets, but acknowledging the music.
KID DAVID started breaking in 2000, when he was eleven years old. He had seen the movie “Breaking” on TV and fell in love with the dance. His mother, a ballet and jazz teacher gave classes at a dance studio and when she told her son that the studio had opened up a breaking class, he started practicing there. He got his name because he was the youngest kid in the group of people he was dancing with.
DAVID entered his first competition in 2003 and became a member of the Renegades in 2004. In 2005, a knee surgery stopped him from dancing for nine months and he was afraid that he would never break again. But then in 2006, he got back on the floor and had a great comeback, winning five consecutive events. In 2007, he had his international debut and has gained a lot of recognition since.
At present, DAVID is planning to go to college to major in video or business and marketing. He is extremely busy at the moment. “I definitely want financial stability in my life. I see myself going back to school part time but training harder then ever. B-Boying is my life and will continue to be for the next ten years regardless of school, family or anything else. I have been very successful so far and my only way is up.”
KID DAVID, in spite of his young age, was able to turn his passion into a profession. “I can’t complain. I’m getting by and the future looks bright.” He does shows and gigs with his crew in San Francisco and makes money by judging B-Boy battles and teaching workshops at international events.
He loves teaching workshops for advanced students. “I don’t like teaching young kids though because it’s hard to separate the babysitting from the teaching. I love to teach master classes because the students there are mature dancers who understand your background and choose to take your class. It is gratifying to teach those who want to learn.”
Asked about his background he says, “I am 100% Jewish—a Russian-Polish Jew.” Both his parents are Jewish and David’s father is a rabbi. His brother was born in Israel but David was born in the United States. Both his parents were always very supportive of his B-Boy career. His mother used to be a ballet and jazz teacher and his father was a mime who trained under legends. They love everything creative and therefore like Hip Hop culture. When DAVID was ten years old, he heard scratching on the Beastie Boys record “Check Your Head” and right away his parents bought him turntables, a mixer and speakers.
KID DAVID calls himself a Hip Hop head. He has experimented with all elements but stuck with B-Boying, which is his biggest love. He is surrounded by friends representing all elements of the culture and feels very fortunate to be part of the movement. He also is very happy to live in a city that has a great Hip Hop scene. “Hip Hop is my life and I feel very lucky to live a culture in which we can still talk to the founders and originators of what we do.”
KID DAVID can’t wait to go to Paris for the RED BULL BC ONE. He is very confident and feels he has more to offer than the average participant. “I freestyle, listen to the music, and have fun. At the same time I have an original and powerful arsenal and technicality to back it up. I also have a lot of experience in battles—strategy is very important in competitions. I’m excited to see what happens!”
