Profile:
When Edgar Cornejo’s grandmother gave him the nickname Gato – which means “cat” in Spanish – in his childhood, she could never have imagined how perfectly suited to him it would be in the future. Edgar grew up, fell in love with B-Boying and maintained the nickname in his professional life. Cats are masters of agility whose beauty and perfection when executing unimaginable movements never cease to amaze. The same goes for this B-Boy’s performances, whose style is rooted in power moves and all its varieties.
One could call this Mexican, member of the Acme Crew, somewhat of a veteran in the scene. He’s been collecting titles since 2006, as well as a fourth runner-up place at the Red Bull BC One in São Paulo, in 2007. Now, Gato returns to Brazil to battle in Salvador for a place in the 2011 Red Bull BC One World Final, the largest one-on-one B-Boying championship in the world, which will be held in Russia this year. Gato promises to give it his all in this competition and, on the subject of his sources of inspiration, is clear in his answer: “My family, my wife and my daughter. My love for B-Boying takes up all their time, and that includes teaching step-by-step lessons of this art to younger generations”.
For Gato, the B-Boy scene in Mexico still has a long way to go, but he’s making sure he does his part by teaching B-Boying to kids. “What makes a great B-Boy is, above all else, a good foundation of knowledge about B-Boying”, he says. He first discovered the scene 12 years ago, on the streets of his hometown. His goals for the future are to carry on encouraging hip hop culture and to have his own B-Boy school in his community. “In the end it’s up to God, but in 10 years, I want to be an old school b-boy in the scene”, says the already experienced Gato.
