Profile
Jonathan Guy Cruz aka DO-KNOCK is probably the world’s most entertaining B-Boy. He won the US American Star Search show 3 times in the years 2003 and 2004. His stage presence is extraordinary and his battle skills are incredible. His signature move is the “Rockin’ Thai.”
His first encounter with breaking was watching the Harry Belafonte production “Beat Street” in 1993. Then his older brother, Jacob, started breaking and got really good at it. Jonathan always wanted to be like his brother and tried to break like him, but his brother discouraged him because he worried that Jonathan would get hurt. By the time DO-KNOCK was 9 years old, he had taught himself a drill headspin and the worm, so his brother finally agreed to teach him to keep him from breaking his neck.
DO-KNOCK is a born entertainer and his mission in life is to entertain and move crowds. He not only dances, but he is also a talented singer and is working on an R ’n B & Soul album that will come out next year. Because of his exceptional abilities, he is able to make a living by dancing, singing, acting, and appearing in music videos. In addition, he draws, makes home videos and is currently working on a DVD about his crew “Battle Monkeys” called “Swinging to a Higher Level.”
When he was a kid, Jon chose the name Baby Legs as his B-Boy name since Crazy Legs was popular at the time. When he got older and more serious about B-Boying, he and his crew tried to think up some really cool names. Jon came up with DO-KNOCK but the others just laughed saying, “What’s that supposed to mean?” so it didn’t stick. In 1999 they got invited to practice with the West Coast Rockers and Rock Force Crew. They were so excited, they arrived hours early and B-Boy Wyze9 invited them to chill in his jacuzzi. There he asked the boys for their names and when it came to “Baby Legs” he started laughing, “Are you serious?” Jon quickly told him he planned to change it to DO-KNOCK anyway. Wyze9 advised, “You better do that!” So he did.
Jon always loved to dance. In the 90’s he studied Michael Jackson and tried to imitate him. He especially admired the way Michael could entertain thousands. B-Boy Ivan was another role model who inspired Jon to work hard and improve. Later, DO-KNOCK watched videos of the Nicholas Brothers, a famous tap dancing pair. He was amazed at how smooth and fluid they were. He found that studying tap improved his footwork, made him faster and gave him more variety. He says if he wasn’t a B-Boy, he would be a tap dancer.
DO-KNOCK incorporates many influences into his dancing. His style is constantly changing and evolving and he never dances the same way twice. For him the RED BULL BC ONE in 2006 was another opportunity to do what he likes best—entertain!
