Profile
Marcus Andreassen aka DARK MARC is the winner of the RED BULL BC ONE qualifier for Scandinavia and the Baltic. His style is pure and fundamental. He keeps it smooth and swift. Marc is into form and aesthetics. For him it’s about flow and perfection rather than crazy moves. His signature moves are the less spectacular moves like kick-sweeps, knee-drops, swipe-runs, invert ninja, and something he calls elbow-kickup-freeze. Mostly it’s the patterns he dances in and how he moves that determine his style.

DARK MARC started breaking in 1997, after watching a very bad instructional video from the 80s. He always had a passion for music and enjoyed dancing when he was just a little kid. Marc believes that all dance comes from people’s reactions to certain types of music. For him the music has to have a certain type of groove whether it’s rock, soul, fusion, funk, Latin or calypso. Every type of music has its dance, and every dance has its character. When Marc first saw B-Boying and heard the raw funk, he had no choice but to do it. To this day, he still feels the same. “If my body is a train with no breaks, my soul is the engine and my intellect is the passenger. I will go until I crash, so let's hope the rails go far!”

Most of the time, Marc manages to make a living by dancing, doing shows and giving classes, but he feels that somewhat kills his passion for the dance, that’s why he is not sure if he wants to keep doing it professional. He wants to keep his passion pure and real and not change it into something that wears him out. His goal is to be known and respected as a good B-Boy, be happy and have enough money to not constantly worry about paying the bills.

Marc’s family is very supportive. His father is a musician and therefore understands his need for artistic self-expression. DARK MARC not only dances, but also works on the wheels of steel as a funk DJ. Marc got his name from a friend who likes to rhyme about people. One night when they went out and his friend was drunk, he spat some rhymes and dropped the name DARK MARC and it just stuck.

Marc thinks Hip Hop is a beautiful culture but doesn’t like the fact that it is getting more and more commercialized. He feels the people within the culture should form and sculpt it, not the commercial world which wants to exploit the culture. Marc says, “Money rules they say, but let’s hope that breaking remains real.”

Marc is looking forward to the RED BULL BC ONE in South Africa. He says the event in Sweden was great and he expects to have a good time in Soweto. He feels that events like the RED BULL BC ONE help the culture to grow and get more recognition. He hopes that Red Bull will keep up the good work and stay true and not try to change the culture to make it more marketable. He says, “I strongly feel that it’s important to keep the art alive in the dance and not turn it into a sport!”

Asked what makes a good B-Boy Marc says, “You need foundation. You need to have a strong basis and then it’s about how you cement the bricks together to make it into a solid construction. You need to have a feel and an understanding for the music. Practice hard and try to let yourself go! Let your flavor and style grow and mature with time and experience. That will make your style look natural and unique!”
