Red Bull BC One Qualifier Sweden 2007

Saturday night June 2nd, the 16 of the best B-Boys from Scandinavia and the Baltics battled it out in Stockholm. Dark Marc from Norway seized the victory; a win that will take him to the world final in South Africa.

It was the first time Red Bull BC One held a qualifier in Scandinavia. The contest was arranged outdoors on a parking lot in Kista, a Stockholm suburb, during the Hoodsfred festival.

The weather conditions were great with sunny skies and 20° Celsius. The stands were full and the standing audience was tightly packed to get a glimpse of the stars from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Iceland.

In the finals Dark Marc from Norway met Hefo from Denmark. Dark Marc impressed the judges with his stamina and capability of keeping his clean style all the way, despite the intensive tempo of the competition.

“It’s unbelievable right now. I didn’t expect to win before this event and now I’m off to the international final in Johannesburg. That’s just awesome!” says Dark Marc in an interview shortly after the victory.

One of the pre-event favourites, King FoOlish from Sweden, drew the most applause during the first rounds with his extremely sharp and flowing dance style, full of energetic spins, but King FoOlish lost to Hefo in the semi finals. It was a tight battle and had to be decided in an extra tie break set.

18 year old Whinta got many in the audience to gasp for air with his energy. No other B-Boy had as much acrobatics in his program. The audience cheered out loud when for example while running forward at full speed he made a stylish flip backwards. Local hero B-Boy Oxygen from Stockholm also impressed with his extreme power.

“The contestants all impressed in the first rounds. But if you want to be a high-class battle B-Boy you have to be able to keep your stamina and maintain your style for round after round till the end. Our judgement was also based on the feeling for the music and the interaction with the audience,” said Kwikstep from New York City who was one of three judges in the qualifier.

Through his victory in the Scandinavian qualifier Dark Marc will travel to Johannesburg in South Africa to participate in the world final of the Red Bull BC One 2007. To receive the title “Red Bull BC One Champion” is as close as it gets to being the world champion in B-Boying.
