LEONY CLOSES RED BULL BC ONE WORLD FINAL LINE-UP
20-year old Leony from Brazil closes the Red Bull BC One World Final line-up after winning the Last Chance Cypher.
The event held at Nagoya's Meijo University saw 38 breakdancers from 35 countries battle to earn the last open spot of the Red Bull BC One World Final that will take place in the city on Saturday, December 3.
Having won national Cyphers (one-on-one qualifying events) in their home countries, all flew over to face five judges who rated solo performances and one-on-one battles.
Coming from Belem in the north of Brazil, Leony came out victorious of the final battle against local B-Boy Yosh. He will join the 15 competitors who're already invited to the world final.
"It wasn't a surprise to win today, because I've trained, I've prepared for this. What surprised me is that I felt calm, even though this is a really big event, an event of enormous scale. But I just wanted to dance.", Leony said after winning the Last Chance Cypher. "For me, breaking is everything. It's my job and it's my personality. Breaking is life: it's about respect, learning from the older ones, and learning to show that respect on stage and everywhere else in my life."
The competition started off with a cypher event, one-on-one battle format that five judges – Red Bull BC One All Stars Pelézinho, Lil G, Menno, Ronnie and Lilou – looked at. With solo performances (four dancers at a time on the stage), the judges identified the dancers who moved on to the battling in 10 heats (9 heats of 4 dancers and 1 round of 2 dancers) and eventually the top 16 final who advanced to the battle in a knockout format like the world final. Those who competed for the last spot in the World Final were: Willy, Kaku, Leony, T-Rock, Dr. Hill, Klash, Thomaz, Legosam, Xak, Blue, Zooty Zoot, Yan, Harrien, Pluto, Illz and Yosh.
