DJ Ready D
Ready D - aka Deon - was born in District Six, Cape Town. At the age of 10, during the height of the Apartheid Era, together with his mother, sister and thousands of other so called "coloured" families, he was forceably removed from District Six to the Cape Flats. At the time, District Six was regarded a prime site given its close proximity to the commercial heart of Cape Town. Under the laws of the South Africa at the time, the area was given "whites only" status, making it illegal for non-white people to live there.
Growing up on the desolate Cape Flats, Deon was constantly surrounded by gangs, poverty and a lack of identity - a legacy of the forced removals. During his teens, however, Deon found refuge with the beginnings of the Hip Hop culture, and started breaking. At the age of 15, he joined a crew - Ballastic Rockers - which featured Ramone, Jazmo and Gogga who would later also combine to form Prophets of the City.
A turning point in Deon's career was a trip to Liverpool, England, sponsored by a friend. Here Deon came into contact with some of the top DJ's plying their trade at the time. On returning to Cape Town, Deon acquired his first pair of Lenco turntables ... it was the birth of Ready D the DJ.
In 1990, Ready D entered the South African National DJ Championship ... he has won it three times since, and remains the most skilled and versatile Hip Hop DJ in South Africa.
