Check out what's hot and happening all around the B-Boy Event

The next day, I met with 3 of the 8 members of the Belizian Hip Hop Dance Crew New Generation, which seems to be one of 2 crews in the country. Unfortunately I didn’t have much time to spend with them because I had to head to the airport as I was supposed to fly to El Salvador for a B-Boy Battle. I met Joseph and the guys on the overpass at the country’s only roundabout. The overpass cost the city a fortune and nobody ever uses it. I took some pictures, shook hands with Joseph, who had to run off to his teaching job, and then sat down with the guys to find out how they got into dancing.

The guys told me that it is hard in Belize to stay out of trouble. Drugs and crime are everywhere and so you need something to keep you on track. They all said that Joseph did a wonderful and very important thing by organising this dance competition and getting it on TV, because it inspires kids and gives them new chances.

Belize it or not—B-Boys in Belize City

At the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts in Belize City, I had gotten the contact to Joseph Stamp Romero, the producer and organizer of the TV Show Competition “Masters of the Floor.”

Joseph is a dancer and teaches literature and performing arts at St. John's College. I asked him for some information about the show he produces and here’s what he told me:

“Masters of the Floor is a show bringing into the spotlight the talents of kids in school and kids out in the street. It reminds them that they are gifted, that their lives have a purpose, and that they should be using their talents in a positive way.

Belize it or not—B-Boys in Belize City

I am looking out of the window and funny enough, on the other side of the street I can see big Red Bull can stickers pasted on the windows of a gym on the second floor. I am trapped in a Pizza Hut in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, by the pouring rain outside—but that’s another story. Today I want to tell you about Belize, a tiny Caribbean country that I fell in love with and the inspiring kids I met there. That country is full of wonders of nature and of great people. I spent two weeks there, went scuba diving and finally managed to just relax and slow down.

„Caye Caulker – Go Slow“ is the first thing you read when you leave the boat and step onto the pier – and that’s the way the world moves here – slow! There are no cars; you ride around on a bicycle or on a golf cart if you don’t like to walk. Caye Caulker is a little island, 2 km wide, 8 km long, positioned 35 km northeast of Belize City in the Caribbean Sea. It has 1,300 inhabitants of whom most are Creoles, Garifuna or Mestizos. The language spoken is mainly English, but the locals speak Kriol and that seems to include lots of swear words. There are also Spanish speaking inhabitants though and most of the supermarkets seem to be owned by Chinese people.
