Check out what's hot and happening all around the B-Boy Event

On March 7, I met the Oaxacan B-Boys again at the Zocalo, the big plaza in the centre. The guys meet at the Zocalo on Saturdays to hang out and practice. They don’t do it for the money, just for the fun of it. Whatever little money they collect, will be spent on batteries for their boombox and on water and sometimes new music. They usually have a gym to practice in, but on Saturday nights, they love to hang out at the Zocalo for a while. One of the guys, B-Boy Roussel, who’s into Popping and Locking, surprised me by speaking to me in German. I learned that he was a teacher. I asked him how B-Boys were respected in Mexico and he said that for most people, they were just like scum from the street. He said if the school knew he was dancing in the street, they’d immediately fire him.
A couple of days later, I met up with Descontrol in the gymnasium of the university They were practicing for an event they are organizing on April 4th. A crew battle called “Guelabreakza,” you can find information at www.myspace.com/bboymarrek and www.mundobreak.com.mx/foro/showthread.php?p=5894

On February 26, Berlin-based Mexican B-Girl/MC Sinaya www.mc-sinaya.com took me to a practice space in Cuajimalpa. What a trip! Mexico City is so big – everything is far away. We first took a subway and met with B-Boy Roka and B-Boy Thomazoid of Anikilation Squad and with B-Girl Soul. After meeting at the subway we had to take a bus and altogether the trip was a 2 hour journey. Sinaya explained to me that was why you picked your crew from your area – it’s just too exhausting to travel to the other side of town to practice.
