Jam Session - Friday 27 August
Lilou and Roxrite were invited to the township of Mitchell’s Plein for a jam session with the local youth. The kids had the opportunity to do a Q & A before the session with the Red Bull BC One All Stars. In attendance were South African Hip Hop & B-Boying Pioneers like Ready D, Black Noise, and B-Boy Levi among others.
B-Boys of all ages were taking part in the Jam. Neither the Red Bull BC One All Stars, nor the local B-Boys held back. Cape Town showed muscle, like the rest of South Africa, with proficiency in power moves. Lilou remarked, “Its crazy how flexible the South African guys are! With more influence by B-Boys from the international scene and some practice with attention to footwork and the technical side of things, they should easily be a force to be reckoned with.”
Workshops - Saturday 28 August
Again, the sessions proved to be most informative, with the Cape Town scene there in full force. Everybody tried to get as much out of the workshops as possible. The kids in South Africa don’t get many opportunities like this. Roxrite worked on technique and foundation with the B-Boys and B-Girls. He felt this would be the areas, where he could add the most value to the performance of the locals. That was very much appreciated and everybody paid full attention as Roxrite explained and showed them drills.
Lilou taught the B-Boys how to work on their sets so that they could get the maximum out of them. He challenged the dancers to be more creative with various transitions for each of their particular moves. The B-Boys took heed of Lilou’s words and physical illustrations and strove hard to work on their sets, while Lilou kept an eye on them, helping out with more pointers where needed. It was a great session!
Encounters Film Festival - Saturday 28 August
Turn it Loose was received with great appreciation; even by those who didn’t have any idea about B-Boying before. The Q & A session hosted by Switch was a mind opener for those not regularly exposed to the art of B-Boying. You could tell people fell in love with B-Boying there and then, due to the way it was depicted in the movie. Having protagonists of the movie available for questioning was a treat to behold. The audience could not get enough of them with that one question being posed to Lilou once again, “Where is the belt?”
A big thank you to Red Bull BC One All Stars Lilou and Roxrite for being so approachable and available for every query posed to them by the local B-Boys. Sheer class personified! This is it from the Tour. We in South Africa would be happy to welcome the Red Bull BC One All Stars back at any time!
Peace out!
