Red Bull BC One Qualifier South Africa 2007
Performing to a crowd of 600 screaming spectators at the Red Bull BC One National Qualifier, Alfred Benny aka B-Boy Benny used his inventive moves and classic style to defeat fifteen of the country’s top B-Boys, claiming his spot at the world’s foremost one-on-one B-Boying contest – the Red Bull BC One.
Hailing from Kuilsriver in Cape Town, Benny has previously competed in the 2005 edition of this international Hip Hop event, establishing himself as one of the most respected B-Boys in the country. Known for his refined technique and aggressive character, Benny used his individuality to knock out his opponents over his featured four rounds.
“I felt that, above all the other competitors, Benny was really hungry for the win and had the fire in him to steamroller his opponents,” said head judge Ken Swift, former member of New York City’s original Rock Steady Crew. “Its now time for him to just practise his moves and concentrate on his execution in preparation for his international battle.”
Well-known Hip Hop icon and local judge, Ram1 agreed, “I am really glad that Benny went through. Red Bull BC One will be incredibly tough and he definitely has both the style and the experience behind his name.”
Benny will now face some stiff competition as he represents Mzansi at the international Red Bull BC One contest, scheduled for 22 September in Soweto, Johannesburg. He will be competing against an all-star international line-up as global B-Boy icons such as Hong 10, Ronnie and Roxrite battle it out in the quest to crown the world’s best breaker.
“I’m just going to practise as hard as I can since I know I’m going up against the best in the world,” Benny says. “I’m going there to do my best, make my country proud and to take on Hong 10.”
