Brazilian heat wins over Mexican fire at Red Bull BC One Latin-American Qualifier

There was no need to kick-start the old furnace at Parque Fundidora to get sparks going at Horno 3 in Monterrey. The beats and steps of the B-Boys that took part in the Red Bull BC One Latin America Qualifier, Saturday, August 25, worked the sold-out crowd into a frenzy. Brazil demonstrated why it is a powerhouse in B-Boying, with all three of its participants making it to the semifinals and crowning a new continental champion: B-Boy Klesio .

Only 22 years old, Klesio, part of the New Old School crew, rose as the best of the 16 B-Boys from all over the region, and in the last round defeated local crowd favorite B-Boy Gato. The vote was unanimous, with all three judges, B-Boy Lil G, B-Boy Moy and B-Boy Nasty Ray handing the match to Klesio.

“I think the judges looked at my steadiness, my energy and joy when I was dancing, and that showed and complemented my moves on the floor, but I think my calmness was key for winning. Reaching the final was great already; winning the final is even better,” said the champion, who will represent Latin America at the Red Bull BC One World Final, while holding with great pride a flag of his home country.

Nonetheless, Gato showed great composure while finishing off another Brazilian in the semifinal round. B-Boy Luan was one of the favorites to win it all, and had advanced without much trouble and with a fierceful attitude before facing the Mexican. During the second face-off, Luan looked a little tired as a result of the intense previous battles, and he couldn’t shake it off to advance to the final.

“As you saw, it was a very difficult challenge. We did our best, I think we both gave our best. Today I lost, but second place is really good. I faced a great rival on the semifinal round, which makes it even more special. Unfortunately, only one of us could win. I went into it with full explosiveness, to try and show what I’ve got”, said Gato.

Klesio is a great inspiration on how to get up after defeat. He finished second at the Red Bull BC One Cypher in Brasilia this year, and now revenge was his, as he downed B-Boy Xandin, who had previously won back home in Brazil. Back then, the stakes were not as high; now the win represents his ticket to the World Final, where he expects to succeed with the same strategy in Rio de Janeiro in December.

“My mindset is the same. I don’t think about winning or losing; in my mind there is only dancing. I don’t dance for the judges, I don’t care about them. What keeps me going is the energy of the crowd and I look at my adversary,” said Klesio. “I just want to dance, I’m not obsessed with winning.”

Being Brazilian, many thought that Klesio would display a more aerial game based on Capoeira, but it was quite the opposite. The 22-year old applied the bases of breaking with more down-on-the-ground moves to win.

Lil G, the Venezuelan B-Boy and judge that took part in the Red Bull BC One World Final in 2011 in Russia, said Klesio will live a unique and unforgettable experience next December, one that he must seize.

“The best part was the experience I gained, sharing with the other B-Boys, getting to know them and learning from them, because you get to see so many different things coming from so many professionals from around the world,” said Lil G.

With the Latin American champion in place, there are three more Qualifiers to go. Auckland, New Zealand, will host the Asia Pacific regional next September 1, while the Middle East - Africa final will take place in Marrakesh, Morocco on September 14th. The last qualifier will take place on September 22, in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, and will decide the best B-Boy of Western Europe.

Rio de Janeiro will host the Red Bull BC One World Final on December 8. The winners of the six qualifying rounds, plus last year’s champion, B-Boy Roxrite (United States), and nine guest B-Boys will dance off till only one is left standing.

Otra final México vs Brasil, ahora en Red Bull BC One Latin American Qualifier

No hubo necesidad de encender el Horno 3 del Parque Fundidora para volver a sacar chispas en Monterrey. Los beats y los pasos de los B-Boys en la eliminatoria Latinoamericana de Red Bull BC One prendieron a las personas presentes que llevaron a su máxima capacidad el escenario la noche de este sábado 25 de Agosto. Brasil demostró su calidad en el breakdance al llevar a sus tres representantes hasta la ronda de semifinal e instaurar al campeón de esta región del continente: B-Boy Klesio.

Con 22 años de edad, el integrante del crew New Old School se erigió como el mejor de los 16 breakdancers asistentes al evento, y en el último combate pasó sobre el mexicano B-Boy Gato con una contundente decisión unánime. Los tres jueces; B-Boy Lil G, B-Boy Moy y B-Boy Nasty Ray, lo vieron como único ganador.

"Yo pienso que los jueces miraron mi tranquilidad, mi energía y alegría a la hora de bailar y eso ha sido complementado con los movimientos en el piso pero, creo que mi tranquilidad fue la clave para ganar. Llegar a la final ya fue bueno; ganar la final es aún mejor", señaló el ahora denominado representante de América Latina para la Final Mundial de Red Bull BC One sosteniendo con orgullo la bandera de su nación.

Si bien, Gato demostró temple al haber vencido en la semifinal al brasileño B-Boy Luan, uno de los favoritos y quien había avanzado sin contratiempos hasta el penúltimo combate con una actitud retadora; en el combate final, su segunda entrada denotó su cansancio, situación que pesó en su rendimiento.

"Como vieron fue un combate difícil. Se hizo lo posible por hacer lo mejor, creo que cada uno dio lo mejor. Tocó perder pero un segundo lugar es muy bueno. La semifinal tuvo un gran sabor porque enfrenté a un B-Boy de gran nivel, desafortunadamente únicamente uno podía ganar. He entrado haciendo explosividad, completo, demostrando lo que traía".

Klesio es un claro ejemplo de que es posible levantarse después de la derrota. Segundo lugar en el Red Bull BC One Cypher en Brasilia de este año, ahora cobró venganza en semifinales sobre su compatriota B-Boy Xandin, quien lo había derrotado en la justa de su ciudad. En aquella ocasión, el triunfo únicamente representó avanzar con un mejor cartel a la Qualifier de Latinoamérica; ahora, significa el pase a la Final Mundial que se desarrollará en Río de Janeiro el próximo 8 de Diciembre donde espera triunfar con la misma estrategia.

"Pienso la misma cosa que ahora. Yo no pienso en ganar o perder; en mi mente esta danzar. Cuando yo estoy bailando yo no bailo para los jueces. Para mí no son importantes. Lo que yo ligo es la energía del público y me fijo en el adversario. Yo quiero bailar. No me obsesiono con ganar", indicó el vencedor en Monterrey, México.

Aunque algunos creyeron que por ser brasileño, Klesio denotaría un juego aéreo a la hora del combate tomando como base la capoeria, la realidad fue distinta. Los fundamentos del breakdance combinados con un juego más a nivel de suelo, resultaron las armas de este competidor de 22 años.

El juez B-Boy Lil G, originario de Venezuela y quien compitió en la Final Mundial de Red Bull BC One en el 2011 en Rusia, apuntó que Klesio vivirá una experiencia única en diciembre próximo, misma que deberá aprovechar.

"Lo que más me quedó fue la experiencia de vivir y compartir con los demás b-boys, conocer con ellos y aprender de ellos, porque ves más cosas debido a que asisten muchos profesionales de todo el mundo", apuntó Lil G.

Con el representante de Latinoamérica definido, quedan aún por realizar tres Qualifiers. Auckland, Nueva Zelanda, será la sede el 1 de Septiembre de la zona Asia - Pacífico; mientras el 14, Marrakech en Marruecos verá al ganador del Medio Este y África. La ciudad holandesa de Rotterdam será la última sede de la ronda previa; cuando el 22 de Septiembre escojan al breakdancer del Occidente de Europa.

La Final Mundial de Red Bull BC One se disputará el 8 de Diciembre en Río de Janeiro Brasil. Los ganadores de las seis rondas de Qualifiers más el actual campeón, B-Boy Roxrite (Estados Unidos) disputada en Moscú, se unirán a nueve b-boys invitados para decidir al 'único'.
