Red Bull BC One

On June 2, 2012, the world’s most prestigious B-Boy competition BC One Cypher took place in Seoul, Korea, to a 1400-strong crowd ready to witness the selection process of the one who will represent Korea to take one of 16 places available in the Red Bull BC One Asia Pacific Qualifier later this year. The winner of that competition will move on to represent Asia in Brazil at the end of the year. At the South Korea qualifier, T.I.P Crew’s Differ came on top.

The day began at 3 p.m. with an audition battle of 80 participants in all. Needless to say, it was a fierce battle between the experienced and the up-and-coming B-Boys. As the hours wore on, the heat in Platoon Kunsthalle, one of Seoul’s most recognizable culture spaces grew heavy along with the collective sighs and cheers when some of their favorite B-Boys were eliminated in the early rounds. The judges included former Rock Steady Crew’s Easy-Roc (USA), BC One All Star Pelezinho (Brazil)and Hong 10 (Korea) with veteran MC Go (Korea) playing host.

The competition included a showcase from Beatbox BigRoad (Korea) who rocked the house with his beatboxing. By then, the competition trimmed the participants to the best 8 - Differ, Vero, Shorty Force, Roo, Sukist, Skim, Dol and Noodle. Differ stayed away from power moves but stuck to expert executions and captured the crowd with his dizzying yet fun moves. Skim eliminated his competition with his energy-packed moves, leaving them in a bucket of sweat.

In the final round, Differ and Skim seemed to have a lot of respect for each other – greetings were exchanged before the dance-off. The crowd was responding fiercely at every little move, eager to hail one a winner. Skim threw down heavy moves from the get-go with no hesitation but Differ’s refined moves and versatility ultimately polished Skim off stage.

“I’m really happy right now,” Differ beams, with matted hair full of sweat and shining eyes. “I try to be different every time, like my name, when it comes to what I do on stage.” Red Bull BC One All Star Pelezinho who was a judge that evening recalls, “Differ’s style was really clean and he did it all with a smile.”
Long-time breaker Easy Roc praised the event. “Many of the battles were tough calls to make. Some of the guys tonight came with moves I used to dream about doing,” he says modestly.

When asked about the upcoming New Zealand qualifier, Differ confidently says, “I will do the T.I.P Crew proud.”

2012년 6월 2일 대한민국 서울에서 열린 ‘레드불 BC One Cypher’에서 1400명 이상의 관중들이 올해 개최될 ‘레드불 BC One 아시아 퍼시픽 예선전’에 한국을 대표하여 출전하게 될 단 한 명의 비보이가 선발되는 순간을 보기 위해 모였습니다. 사이퍼를 통해 선발되어 뉴질랜드에서 열리는 ‘레드불 BC One 아시아 퍼시픽 예선전’에 참가하여 우승을 차지하는 비보이는 올해 말 브라질에서 아시아를 대표로 출전하게 됩니다. 이날 South Korea에서 열린 사이퍼에서는 T.I.P Crew의 Differ가 우승을 차지했습니다.

행사는 오후 3시경 80명의 참가자들의 오디션 배틀로 시작했습니다. 참가한 비보이들 사이에서 확연한 긴장감이 느껴졌습니다. 시간이 지날수록 대회 현장, 서울 논현동이 위치해 있는 유명 문화 공간 ‘플래툰 쿤스트할레’의 분위기가 뜨거워지면서 탈락하는 비보이들을 향한 응원의 열기와 함성도 커졌습니다. 이날 심사위원은 미국의 전설적인 비보이 크루 Rock Steady Crew의 전 멤버 Easy Roc과 레드불 BC One All Star 선수단의 브라질 출신 Pelezinho와 대한민국의Hong10이 함께했습니다.

Beatboxer BigRoad의 인상적인 비트박스 공연으로 대회장의 열기는 점점 뜨거워졌습니다. 그의 인상적인 공연이 끝나자 최고의 8명으로 경쟁자들이 추려졌습니다. 8강을 치를 비보이들은 Differ, Vero, Shorty Force, Roo, Sukist, Skim, Dol, and Noodle. Differ는 그 동안 본 적 없었던 파워무브 뿐만이 아니라 댄서로서의 무대 매너 또한 현란하면서도 유쾌한 무브로 관중의 시선을 사로잡았습니다. 이에 맞선 Skim은 폭발하는 에너지와 함께 깔끔한 무브로 승승장구 하였습니다.

Differ와 Skim이 대면하게 된 예선전의 마지막 라운드가 시작되자 두 비보이는 악수와 인사를 나누며 존경을 표했습니다. 그리고 이어진 배틀에 관중들은 과연 누가 우승자가 될 것인지 마음을 졸이며 작은 동작에도 열띤 반응을 보였습니다. 망설임 없이 시작된 Skim의 파워 무브에 맞서 Differ는 노련한 무브를 선보였고 숨막히는 박빙의 대결 끝에 Differ가 최종 우승을 차지하였습니다.

Differ는 행사 후 땀으로 이마에 달라붙은 머리카락과 반짝이는 눈빛으로 “기분이 너무 좋습니다”며 활짝 웃었습니다. “매번 무대에 있으면 제 이름(영어로 ‘Differ’는 ‘다르다’라는 동사)과 같이 다른 것을 보여주려고 노력합니다”고 말했습니다. 이날 심사위원이었던 레드불 BC One All Star의 Pelezinho는 “Differ의 스타일은 무척 깔끔했으며 항상 미소로 마무리했습니다”고 하며 Differ를 대회 중 가장 인상적인 비보이로 꼽았습니다.

브레이킹 베테랑 Easy Roc은 행사에 참여한 모든 비보이들에게 아낌없이 찬사를 보냈습니다. 그는 “몇몇 배틀에서 우승자를 뽑기는 정말 힘들었습니다. 이중 몇 명은 예전에 내가 꿈꿔왔던 무브까지 완벽히 소화해냈습니다”며 겸손한 태도와 함께 존경을 표했습니다.

Differ에게 다가오는 뉴질랜드 예선전에 대해 묻자 그는 “T.I.P Crew를 대표해 자랑스러운 결과를 보여드리겠습니다”고 자신 있게 말했습니다.
