JS 1 became known as a tour DJ thanks to beatbox and rap champion Rahzel. However, the DJ from Queens, New York, has been standing behind the turntables since 1989 and is, along with his excellence as a live DJ, also well known for his productions. Together with Dub-L, he also released the album Claimstake, featuring rappers from all over America.
JS 1 will be spinning for Rahzel at the Red Bull BC One in Japan for the third time. He will also DJ at the afterparty in Tokyo!
During the past decade the “DJ / turntablist” has gained even more notoriety and popularity. One “DJ” at the forefront of this movement is Queens native, DJ JS-1 from New York City. As a member of the world famous Rock Steady Crew and partner with Rahzel (the world's #1 beatboxer), JS-1 has toured the planet doing over 1000 shows in more than 35 countries and hundreds of cities. Starting out in the late 80's and honing his craft through out the 90's, JS-1 has consistently been one of the hardest-working “djays” around. From his earlier tracks on the “Return of the DJ” series in the mid 90's, to his countless classic mixtapes, top-selling break records like Scratch Roulette, several 12” singles, 5 full length solo albums, producing a Sadat X solo album, tons of guest appearances, and also spinning for KRS-ONE, DJ JS-1 has stayed relevant and busy.
While building a fan base by producing all these projects and constantly touring, JS has also been on television many times. His first major appearances coming in 1999 on MTV Jams and MTV's Millennium New Years Party lead to other opportunities like being on BET's Rap City for an entire week, being on MTV NEWS, MTV Campus Invasion Tour special, appearing on MTV MADE (2008), and the first-ever DJ appearance on REGIS & KELLY Live (ABC) morning show. DJ JS-1 has also been on numerous television shows in other countries, and even appeared in commercials for BET (2000), TNN for James Bond (2002), and the NFL Network(2009). Known for rocking festivals, concerts and clubs opening for major acts, scratching with his foot, and his extensive catalog of underground hip hop productions, he has entertained millions of different people around the world. DJ JS-1 has also done several corporate gigs, djaying or producing music for Bacardi, Activision Games (Tony Hawk), Mossimo, Kool Cigarettes, Benson N Hedges, Red Bull, Heineken, Adidas, Video Game Awards, ABC/Disney, HBO, Twix, Truth (anti-smoking campaign), Bloomberg Corp, and others. Many of these appearances and albums have lead to interviews and reviews in major publications like Source Magazine, XXL magazine, Urb magazine, Rolling Stone magazine, Fader magazine, as well as his constant presence on all the biggest hip hop websites and blogspots. Last year alone, JS-1 had music, interviews or reviews on hundreds of sites.
The assortment of 12” singles and albums he has produced and released via FATBEATS RECORDS has separated him from most of the other “DJ / turntablists” in the world who do not produce their own music. In the era of laptop producers, everyone is making predictable dance mash-ups and boring us with the SAME repetitive trend-following tracks. JS-1 maintains a level of musical integrity, never follows trends, and always shows his skills while keeping the masses dancing, all eyes on the stage... There are very few hip hop djays with a resume' and career that compares to DJ JS-1, have performed in as many venues around the world, worked with as many artists, performed on stage with as many artists and djays, and at such a diverse variety of gigs.
Besides shining brightly in a world clouded with too many typical djays, DJ JS-1 has also been a prominent graffiti writer, doing hundreds of “pieces” at all the major hall of fames. Realizing his artistic talent as a graff-writer in the late 80's, JS aka “JERMS” (graffiti name), has been featured in most of the popular graffiti magazines around the world (like “Can Control”), his graff has appeared in major music videos, and he has worked with some legendary graffiti artists as well. With his dj skills, graffiti skills, countless mixes and albums, rock steady crew background, and decade of touring with the best beatboxer ever, JS-1 has done more than most to help promote the true skool elements of real Hip Hop around the world. He is one of the few remaining djays carrying the torch for what Grand Master Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, Jam Master Jay and others before him have started.
Overall, it's obvious that DJ JS-1 keeps himself very busy between producing new albums and touring around the globe. With his latest album, “NO SELLOUT” dropping in June of 2009, it was another year of touring and interviews. This year, 2010 is shaping up to be the same with JS-1 planning to release, NO ONE CARES his next full length LP. Look out for DJ JS-1 of the Rock Steady Crew and Rahzel to be touring through a city near you...
