**Profile:**
EZMike started breaking in 1999, shortly after he had seen a B-Boy show at a village fête. He started learning from an old VCR tape and then in 2001, joined Soul Society, a crew featuring dancers of all Hip Hop dance styles. Apart from B-Boying, Mike also dances a little House and Locking to be more complete. EZMike is definitely more a styler than a powermover and he was surprised that style won over power in the battle in Switzerland, as he had not expected that.
It was Mike’s first Red Bull BC One event. When the battle series started 2004 in Switzerland, he got there to late and the tickets had already sold out. He was tremendously disappointed. Winning the Cypher this year was definitely a great way to make up for that!
Asked about his inspirations he names the Rock Steady Crew: Mr. Wiggles, Ken Swift, Crazy Legs, Whynot, Jeskillz, Bonita, the Mighty Zulu Kings—mainly Alien Ness, the Boogaloos, Elite Force and others. Asked where he got his B-Boys name, he explains that a couple of years ago, Alien Ness was training them in Switzerland and Ness had felt that everything he explained came so easy to Mike. That’s why he started calling him EZMike.
Mike is teaching dance classes four times a week, but has to work part-time as a painter to make ends meet. It would be his dream to be able to live on his art. Apart from family and his girlfriend, who are a great support to him, dancing is the most important thing in his life.
Mike was very nervous before the battle. He had torn a ligament at practice in his right foot three weeks before the event and was really worried how he would manage. But during the battle he didn’t feel any pain, the adrenalin washed it all away.
When I asked him what made him the better dancer that night, he told me that he had not thought about sets and technique, but focused on the music and the rhythm. He didn’t really have a strategy, just decided to have fun. Most of his stuff was freestyle, but he has some sets and because he practices those sets over and over, they come naturally without having to think about it. That was what according to the judges won him the title that night. With Yu-Seng he had a worthy opponent in the finals, but EZMike looked more confident and better prepared, while YU-Seng in the end seemed to be wondering what to do next.
Mike is looking forward to the Red Bull BC One Qualifier in Barcelona in July. “The scene in Switzerland is small, but we have some great dancers. I know the competition in Barcelona is going to be tough, but I will give my best to represent Switzerland and all the B-Boys here!”
